This funky little mineral formed as a result of process called boxwork weathering, where trace minerals (in this case iron) are deposited into crevices in a host rock where they solidify or crystalize, creating intricate patterns. Over time, the rest of the rock erodes away, leaving behind beautiful pieces like this. The texture is similar to river rocks or stones found on the beach that have been tumbled to a smooth finish.
